On a recent trip to the Greek island of Crete, we made a quick stop in Chania, one of the island’s most charming and historic towns. While our original plan was simply to find a convenient place to crash after a late-night flight, we decided to dip into our stash of Marriott Bonvoy points and treat ourselves to something special: Domes Zeen Chania, Crete, a Luxury Collection Resort. However, we should have stayed longer....
What was meant to be a simple overnight stay quickly revealed itself as a missed opportunity to soak in what this incredible resort has to offer. After just one night, it became clear that Domes Zeen Chania is the kind of place you come to for a proper escape—not just a one night stopover.

Arrival Experience: A Bumpy Start
Our journey began at Chania International Airport (CHQ) after an easy flight from Copenhagen. However, picking up the rental car turned out to be more of an adventure than expected. While most rental companies are located inside the terminal, Enterprise operates from an off-site location with minimal signage and little direction. After some confusion wandering around the airport, we gave them a call, and they casually sent someone over to pick us up. Let’s just say, the island pace of life is relaxed—and it was clear we were now in Crete.
From there, it was a 15-minute drive to the resort. But even that wasn’t as straightforward as expected, especially arriving at night. The entrance to Domes Zeen is tucked away down a narrow, residential road that feels more like a shortcut through the countryside than the approach to a luxury property. With no prominent signage and surrounded by local homes, we found ourselves double-checking the GPS more than once.
Eventually, we pulled into a gravel parking lot—an unexpected first impression for a five-star resort. But as soon as we stepped out of the car and took in the stone pathways leading uphill toward the main entrance, that initial uncertainty faded. The understated luxury of the resort began to reveal itself.

Check-In: A Warm Welcome
Check-in was seamless and personal. Despite our late-night arrival, the staff welcomed us warmly with a refreshing arrival drink. There was a hint of surprise when they realized we were only staying for one night—understandable, given that most guests at Domes Zeen settle in for several days to fully enjoy the resort’s amenities and tranquil setting.
Frankly, I couldn’t blame them for their reaction, this is not the kind of place designed for a quick overnight stay.
Booking with Points: Decent Value, but Know the Policies
We used 95,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night for each of our two rooms. Cash rates during our stay were hovering around €800 per night for the suite we booked, making it a decent redemption but not necessarily extraordinary.
A word of caution: Domes Zeen has a stricter cancellation policy than many other Marriott properties, often requiring notice several weeks in advance for points bookings. Always double-check the terms when locking in your stay.
The Rooms: Spacious and Private
We reserved two Tropical Open Plan Suites, each featuring a private pool and a large terrace. The rooms were spacious and beautifully designed, blending indoor comfort with outdoor living.
Inside, the decor continued the resort’s earthy, modern theme. Floor-to-ceiling windows opened onto the terrace, connecting the space to the outdoors.
Our private pool, while modest in size, felt like a secluded oasis. It was hard not to feel like we were in our own personal retreat.
As a Titanium Elite member, I was pleasantly surprised to find a welcome gift waiting in the room—a thoughtful touch that added to the sense of hospitality.
Dining: A Taste of Crete
While our stay was brief, we made time for the included breakfast at the resort’s Beach House Restaurant, situated just above the pool area with sea views.
The breakfast spread was impressive and locally inspired. Fresh-baked pastries, Greek yogurt with honey, seasonal fruits, and a variety of savory options were on offer. Eggs made to order, along with rich Greek coffee, completed the experience. The open-air setting made for a peaceful start to the day.
Though we didn’t have time to sample dinner or lunch, the resort also features Gallina Restaurant, a fine-dining venue that focuses on Cretan cuisine. It’s another reason I’d love to return for a longer stay.

Pool and Beach
Pool: Overlooking the sea, with comfortable loungers and shaded areas.
Private Beach: Small but serene, with cushioned loungers and beachside service. During our visit, we had the beach entirely to ourselves—a rare treat.
Location: Close to Chania, But Feels Worlds Away
One of Domes Zeen Chania’s best features is its proximity to Chania Old Town, which is only about a 10-minute drive away. The resort even offers a complimentary shuttle service into town. Chania itself is worth exploring for its Venetian harbor, colorful streets, and vibrant dining scene.
Final Thoughts: A Place Worth More Time
After just one night at Domes Zeen Chania, it was obvious we hadn’t given ourselves enough time to truly enjoy the experience. The thoughtful design, personalized service, and serene setting make it a destination in itself—not just a place to sleep.
If you’re considering a visit to Crete, don’t make our mistake. Plan to stay a few days at Domes Zeen. Whether you’re redeeming Marriott points or paying cash, it’s the kind of resort where time slows down and every detail invites you to unwind. I would return without hesitation—and for much longer next time.
