Muir Halifax Review: Is This the Best Hotel in Halifax?

Halifax has long been one of my favourite cities in Canada. The waterfront, the food scene, and the maritime atmosphere make it one of the most enjoyable cities in Atlantic Canada to visit.

For years, however, the city lacked a true luxury hotel. Most of the higher-end options were aging chain properties that felt more like business hotels than upscale destinations.

That changed when the Muir Hotel Halifax opened on the waterfront. Now part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection, the hotel aims to bring a more refined luxury experience to the city.

If you are curious how the brand compares elsewhere, we have also reviewed Al Maha, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa in Dubai, which delivers a very different but equally distinctive Luxury Collection experience.

Muir Halifax Exterior

After several stays in Halifax over the years, I was curious to see whether the Muir finally delivers the luxury hotel Halifax has been missing.

Location

The Muir is located directly on the Halifax waterfront in the Queen’s Marque district.

From a location perspective, it is excellent. Step outside the hotel and you are immediately on the Halifax boardwalk, making it easy to walk along the harbour and explore downtown.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is across the street, and several museums and historic sites are within walking distance.

This area of Halifax is packed with restaurants, cafés, and bars. The city is very walkable, and staying here makes it easy to explore without needing a car.

The hotel offers both valet and self-parking in an underground garage. If you plan to explore more of Nova Scotia, you may want a car, but if your trip is focused on Halifax you likely will not need one.

Booking

I made this booking using two soon-to-expire free night certificates from American Express.

Pricing at the Muir fluctuates significantly depending on the time of year. During my searches, award nights ranged from about 50,000 Bonvoy points on the low end to roughly 87,000 points during peak summer dates.

Cash rates also vary widely. Standard rooms can range from roughly $350 per night to more than $700 during the busiest travel periods.

Halifax becomes extremely popular in the summer months when cruise ships are visiting the city, and both cash rates and award pricing tend to increase significantly during that time.

If you are visiting Halifax during peak summer travel, it is often worth booking early, as both cash rates and points pricing can climb quickly.

How to Book the Muir Halifax With Marriott Bonvoy Points

The Muir participates fully in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, which means you can redeem points for award stays.

One advantage of booking with points is the Marriott Bonvoy fifth night free benefit. When redeeming points for five consecutive nights, Marriott only charges points for four nights. This can significantly reduce the average cost per night for longer stays.

Another option is using Marriott free night certificates, which are commonly issued with American Express Bonvoy credit cards. Depending on the certificate value, these can work well at the Muir when pricing drops toward the lower end of the points range.

If you are short on points, Marriott occasionally runs promotions offering bonuses when purchasing Bonvoy points. These promotions can make topping up your balance a practical option when you are close to a redemption.

Check In and Lobby

Entering the hotel, you quickly notice that the lobby is relatively small.

There is a compact check-in counter with two agents and a small seating area nearby, but this is not the type of grand lobby you might expect from a luxury property.

Muir Halifax Sitting Area

We arrived slightly before the official check-in time, and our room was not yet ready. Rather than wait, we went out for lunch nearby and received a notification shortly after the published check-in time that the room was ready.

The check-in process itself was friendly and efficient.

The Room

We booked a Signature King guest room.

The hotel still feels very new, and everything in the room was in excellent condition. The design feels modern and distinctly Atlantic Canadian, with natural materials and nautical touches throughout the space.

One detail I particularly liked was the in-room bar setup with full-size bottles, something you rarely see in hotels anymore.

A welcome gift of tea and cookies was waiting in the room when we arrived, which was a nice touch.

Housekeeping throughout the stay was excellent. The room was spotless and clearly very well maintained. Turndown service was also provided each evening with fresh water placed beside the bed along with slippers.

That said, a few design choices were surprising for a newer luxury property. The lighting system in the room was somewhat confusing. Many of the lights were grouped together, making it difficult to control individual lighting zones.

The biggest issue was the bathroom lighting. The shower has a frosted glass wall facing the bedroom. During the day, this is not an issue, but at night it creates a surprising amount of light in the bedroom when the bathroom lights are turned on.

If one person wakes up during the night and turns on the bathroom lights, the entire bedroom lights up. There is a motion sensor light in the bathroom, but oddly it only illuminates the sink area while the toilet area remains dark.

One other issue we experienced was returning to our room one afternoon to find the door slightly open after housekeeping had serviced the room. Nothing was missing, but it is not something you expect at a luxury hotel.

Restaurant: Drift

The hotel restaurant, Drift, is located on the main floor and is where breakfast is served.

Muir Halifax - Drift Restaurant

As a Marriott Platinum member, we received a $25 breakfast credit per person to use at the restaurant.

Breakfast here is menu-based, not a buffet.

Unfortunately, this benefit is quite weak compared to what many Marriott properties offer. Most hotels provide either a full buffet or a list of menu items that are fully covered.

At Drift, $25 does not go very far.

For example, a glass of orange juice costs $9.50, and by the time we finished breakfast, the bill was more than $40 beyond the credit.

Another detail to be aware of is that when using the breakfast credit, the restaurant automatically adds an 18 percent gratuity, which effectively reduces the value of the benefit.

One other issue we encountered was the condition of the restaurant's washrooms. They were surprisingly dirty during our visit, which felt out of place given how clean the rest of the hotel was.

Facilities

At first glance, the amenities at the hotel look impressive. The fitness center is enormous and easily one of the largest hotel gyms I have seen.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the pool area. The pool and sauna space is relatively small, and every time we tried to visit, it was extremely crowded. After attempting three times, we eventually gave up.

The reason became clear later.

The hotel shares the building with a residential condominium tower, and residents have access to the hotel facilities. This likely explains why the pool area always seemed busy.

While shared amenities are not uncommon, the infrastructure here does not really seem designed to handle both hotel guests and residents.

Parking

Both valet and self-parking are available in the underground garage. The cost is $35 per night, which is reasonable for a downtown Halifax hotel.

Marriott Elite Benefits

During this stay, the elite benefits were fairly limited:

No room upgrade was offered, though late checkout was approved.

Breakfast was provided as a $25 credit per person, though automatic gratuity and menu pricing reduced the value of the benefit.

Who Should Stay at the Muir Halifax

The Muir is best suited for travelers looking for a modern luxury hotel in the heart of Halifax.

It is particularly well suited for:

  • Travelers who want to stay directly on the Halifax waterfront

  • Marriott Bonvoy members looking to redeem points in Atlantic Canada

  • Visitors who want a walkable location close to restaurants, museums, and the harbourfront boardwalk

However, if you are looking for large resort-style facilities, you may find the pool and spa area somewhat limited.

Final Thoughts

So is the Muir the best hotel in Halifax?

In many ways, the answer is yes. There is no question that it is currently the most luxurious hotel in the city. The location is excellent, the rooms are modern and well maintained, and the property still feels very new. However, the experience does not fully match what I typically expect from a Luxury Collection hotel.

The weak breakfast benefit, crowded amenities, and a few design quirks prevent the experience from feeling fully polished. In many ways, the property actually feels more like an excellent Autograph Collection hotel rather than a true Luxury Collection property.

That said, it is still the best hotel option in Halifax, and I would happily stay here again. There is simply a lot of room for the hotel to refine the experience and fully live up to the Luxury Collection name.
