On a recent trip to Rome, we returned to the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria for a few nights before flying back to Toronto. Having stayed here previously, we were curious to see how the hotel had held up. While the panoramic hilltop views remained impressive, our second visit revealed some inconsistencies. The rooms showed signs of wear and certain areas of the hotel did not feel as polished as during our first stay.
The Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria offers a unique hilltop retreat in Rome, with resort-style amenities, a large pool, and access to fine dining. For Hilton Honors members looking to redeem points, it can still be a worthwhile option, provided you understand the trade-offs between location, room condition, and city access.
Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria: Too Far From the City Center?
The Rome Cavalieri’s hilltop location near Vatican City provides incredible panoramic views, but it is not within walking distance of Rome’s main attractions. Travelers hoping to stroll to landmarks like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, or Piazza Navona will need to rely on the hotel shuttle, taxis, or ride-share services. The hotel shuttle we used was comfortable and uncrowded in the afternoon, though mornings can fill quickly, so advance reservations are recommended. Taxis or ride-shares typically take 15 to 20 minutes to reach central Rome.

For those prioritizing sightseeing on foot, the location may feel inconvenient. For travelers seeking a quiet retreat with resort-style amenities, a pool, and panoramic views, or a convenient stop before or after a flight, the Rome Cavalieri offers a practical and relaxing experience.

Hotel Overview
The hotel itself is elegantly decorated, featuring a vast collection of artwork that lends it an old-world charm. Some rooms offer stunning views of Rome, while others face away from the city and overlook a large communications tower, which is an unappealing sight.
Unfortunately, we were assigned a room with a view of the tower this time; during our last stay, we had a magnificent view of Rome, particularly enchanting at night. The hotel is also home to La Pergola, a three-star Michelin restaurant, as well as an event room on the top floor with incredible views of the city.

Breakfast and Dining
As Hilton Diamond members, we enjoyed complimentary breakfast during our stay. The breakfast at this hotel is a true highlight, featuring an extensive selection of hot and cold items, including an impressive array of cheeses. It is served in the lower-level Uliveto Restaurant, and we opted to dine outdoors by the pool.

As with all Waldorf properties, the dining options can be expensive, and value is subjective. On our last visit, we dined at the hotel out of convenience; this time, we decided to explore some local restaurants instead. We discovered a highly-rated eatery called Foodoo, which had a steady stream of patrons from the Rome Cavalieri. It is a small, casual spot, but the food was excellent—definitely worth a visit.
Pool
The swimming pool is of decent size but was extremely busy during our visit, likely due to the hotel being fully booked.

Rooms at the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria
We booked two rooms: one King Deluxe and one with two Twin Beds. I couldn't help but notice how much the hotel had deteriorated since our last visit. This may have been due to the timing of our previous stay, which was at the end of the pandemic when the hotel may not have been at full capacity. This time, the hotel was fully booked, and the rooms we received were in a state of disrepair, featuring stained carpets, worn furniture, and dirty linens.
Typically, such issues do not bother me; I have stayed in various accommodations and learned to adapt. However, I believe that a Waldorf property should maintain higher standards. I expected the carpets to be properly cleaned and the furniture to be well-maintained. Additionally, one of our rooms had leaking pipes, and resolving this issue proved to be more challenging than it should have been, suggesting this may be a recurring problem in those rooms.

Is It Worth Redeeming Hilton Honors Points?
Standard rooms at the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria typically cost around 105,000 Hilton Honors points per night. Cash rates can fluctuate significantly, so it’s always worth comparing points versus cash before booking. When considering the complimentary breakfast, resort-style amenities, and the hotel’s hilltop views, redeeming points here can offer solid value, especially during periods of high cash rates.

That said, travelers should consider the trade-offs. If your priority is walking to Rome’s main historic sites, there are more conveniently located hotels. For those seeking a quiet retreat with scenic views, pool access, and fine dining options, the Rome Cavalieri remains a worthwhile points redemption, even with occasional maintenance issues.
Final Thoughts on the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria
The Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria is not the most convenient hotel for exploring the historic center on foot, but it offers a peaceful, resort-style retreat with panoramic views of the city. For Hilton Honors members, the points redemption can be a good value when the focus is on relaxation rather than sightseeing. Our second stay revealed some inconsistencies compared with our first visit, but the hilltop location, spacious rooms, and resort amenities still make the hotel a compelling option for the right type of traveler.
