We recently had the pleasure of spending a few days in Salzburg, Austria, as part of a side trip after visiting Vienna and en route to Italy. The idea was to experience a smaller town and enjoy a more laid-back atmosphere in Austria. However, our time in Salzburg turned out to be quite different from what we had expected. Despite being significantly smaller than Vienna, Salzburg felt surprisingly lively, bustling with activity, and filled with tourists. Even so, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. If you’re planning a visit, here are the top five things we recommend doing in Salzburg:
Salzburg is famously the setting for the iconic film The Sound of Music, and taking a themed tour is an absolute must for fans of the movie. We brought the whole family along, and even though our kids hadn’t seen the movie, they still enjoyed the experience. So don’t worry if not everyone in your group is familiar with the film—there’s still plenty to appreciate!
There are several types of tours available, ranging from bus tours to private car rides and even bike tours. We opted for the Panoramic Tour, and it was a fantastic choice. These tours take you to iconic filming locations, such as the Mirabell Gardens (where the famous "Do-Re-Mi" sequence was filmed), Leopoldskron Palace, and Mondsee Cathedral, where the wedding scene took place.
Beyond the movie connection, the tour also offers stunning views of Salzburg’s countryside, charming villages, and Alpine scenery. Even if The Sound of Music isn’t your thing, the journey through Salzburg’s landscape makes it more than worth it.
2) Relax at a Beer Garden
Salzburg’s beer culture is another highlight of the city. We had the pleasure of visiting Augustiner Bräu Mülln, a historic monastery brewery that serves some of the best traditional beer in Austria. This brewery dates back to 1621 and has a distinctly old-world charm.
Finding it wasn’t the easiest—even with Google Maps—but once we arrived, it was well worth the effort. The beer garden was absolutely packed with locals and visitors alike, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. With its sprawling outdoor seating area under the shade of trees, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a cold drink on a warm day.
What sets Augustiner Bräu Mülln apart is its self-service concept. You pick your beer mug, rinse it in a fountain, and then bring it to the counter to be filled with freshly brewed beer straight from wooden barrels. The beer is exceptional, and there’s also a variety of food stalls serving Austrian delicacies like sausages, pretzels, and roast pork. It’s an experience that combines great flavors, history, and an authentic slice of Austrian culture.
3) Visit Hohensalzburg Fortress
Perched high above the city, Hohensalzburg Fortress is impossible to miss. This iconic castle, one of the largest fully preserved medieval fortresses in Europe, dominates Salzburg’s skyline and offers spectacular panoramic views of the city and its surrounding mountains.
Getting to the fortress is part of the adventure. You can take a funicular from the Old Town, which is a quick and scenic ride, or hike up if you’re feeling adventurous and want a bit of a workout. Once you reach the top, the fortress offers a range of attractions, from its museum exhibits to the Prince’s Chambers, which give you a glimpse into the life of Salzburg’s rulers.
The highlight was the views from the observation deck. On a clear day, you can see the entire city of Salzburg sprawled out below, framed by the stunning Alpine peaks in the distance. Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking for incredible photo opportunities, Hohensalzburg Fortress is a must-visit.
4) Explore the Old Town (Altstadt)
Salzburg’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a delightful area to explore. Its narrow cobblestone streets, architecture, and charming squares create atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time.
One of the most iconic streets is Getreidegasse, Salzburg’s main shopping street. It’s lined with traditional wrought-iron shop signs, historic buildings, and boutique shops. This street is also home to Mozart’s Birthplace, a museum dedicated to Salzburg’s most famous resident. The museum offers a fascinating look into the life and legacy of the musical genius, with displays of personal artifacts and original instruments.

For us, the Old Town wasn’t just a sightseeing spot—it was an experience that allowed us to soak in Salzburg’s vibrant culture and historic charm.
5) Indulge in Salzburg’s Café Culture
No trip to Salzburg is complete without experiencing its traditional café culture. The city boasts a wide range of cozy cafes where you can savor Austrian specialties like apple strudel, sachertorte, and a melange (Austria’s version of a latte).
We visited the iconic Café Tomaselli, Austria’s oldest coffee house, which dates back to 1705. Located in the heart of the Old Town, it’s the perfect spot to take a break and enjoy some people-watching. The street outside was bustling with activity, adding to the lively ambiance.
For something a bit more modern, there are also newer cafes and pastry shops that blend traditional recipes with contemporary flair. Whether you’re starting your morning with a strong coffee or winding down your afternoon with a sweet treat, Salzburg’s cafes offer the perfect setting for a leisurely break.
